188 x 109cm / 3ft 10" x 3ft 5"

A square silk embroidery done on linen from Dodecanese Islands circa 1700. Now a fragment but once almost certainly part of a wedding tent. Now inter-set with cotton crochet work probably not original. The fine silk work depicts fabulous mythological animals and a pairs of opposed birds known from Sogdian and Byzantium silks. A Venetian legacy is also discernible since Venice still held some sway from around this time. A very close cf Ashmolean Museum Oxford EA1978.101 presented by john Buxton 1978.Some damages and small stains are apparent with this historic embroidery.
