This rare Kurdish rug is in the design of a Sewan Kasak Azerbaijan rug. The two communities were inter-spaced following movements of Kurds into the region with the fluctuating border between the Ottoman and Moscovite Empire in the late 19th cent. The use of cochineal being more favoured by the Kurdish community which may have originated in the Malatya region of Eastern Turkey so the actual origin is uncertain.
