Such Kurdish rugs from Northern Iraq were probably never intended for bazaar commerce. The unusually large example having been made on a domestic narrow loom rather than a workshop. They are typically course but nevertheless robust with excellent lustrous wool band thus rather distintive. Such carpets were hardly known in the west until comparative recent times. This example was made early 20th century.
