The design stems from the Chinese Tang period. Silks of this design have been sold continuously into the Tibetan market for a variety of purposes including Tanka scroll paintings, nobleman's clothing and temple embellishments. The condition of the rug is worn but the rug has been stabilised by backing onto a mounted cloth. The rug is evidently archaic and difficult to date.
