This highly elaborate antique garland is composed of various elements including tarnished gilded embroidered parts wrapped onto wood cones with glass beads and droplets and other folding parts not stiffened by wood. The garland woud have been worn by the followers or even perhaps the Newab of Awadh himself.
The traditional armorial and royal emblems of the Kingdom of Awadh (Oudh) in Lucknow typically feature a specific arrangement of martial and courtly symbols formed by two crossed swords pointing upwards and two clubs. The Supporters in two shields on both sides have two twin winged mermaids (sometimes interpreted as angels or Jal Paris) holding morchhals (peacock feather fans) and royal pennons. Mahi Maratib : Placed prominently within the insignia are the iconic addorsed or twin fishes. This was derived from the highest Mughal honour of military distinction and stands as the ultimate symbol of the Court of Lucknow.
