Turkish Kandili type block print (209 x 179cm)

£ 980.00

209 x 179 cm

This hand block printed lightweight domestic cotton cloth was originally produced as a bedding quilt top cover although it has never used for that purpose.

Kandili is an Asian suburb of Istanbul which formally had a significant Greek population where cotton printing went on and by which term these prints are popularly known. The other larger centre of woodblock printing being Tokat close to Izmir in Western Turkey, this being the more probable attribution.

A carefully selected lightweight muslin cloth has been hand sewn to the back as a mount.
