Furniture in the British Raj came to be made in quantity in the Punjab, Mysore and elsewhere in India. Blending the inspirations of Moorish Nasrid Spain and the Ottoman Empire into a hybrid Anglo Indian product. In Punjab workshops were concentrated in Lahore in Northern Punjab but more particularly Hoshiapur, almost certainly using Kashmiri labour and imported hard timbers.
A crucial adaptation of these octagonal tables (and other Punjabi furniture) was the folding action of the legs separating from the under-lipped top, leaving the two parts to pack flat. This feature made it possible to export items easily to Britain where nearly all examples are found, since typically serving officers were easily able to bring bulky items by ship.
Hoshiapur furniture was inlaid with either ivory and ebony or brass, copper and ebony as per our example, with fretwork and carving to the under side supporting legs.
