Heavy hardwood chests were carried on sailing vessels such as Arab dhows from Dutch East Indies to the East African coast. Most often larger and cruder and embellished with sizeable brass decoration adorned in the Persian Gulf region, such portmanteaus came to be known as Zanzibar Chests. This small example is however, furnished with a fine fitted interior with hinged lids and a removable inner section. Therefore, this suggests the chest served the purpose of keeping smaller more precious items than just some old seafarer's tool box.
