The fragment is possibly taken from a part of a saree. In colonial Bengal rule British administrators were not only responsible for the decline traditional weaving from 18th cent but were instrumental in reviving in again in the latter part of 19th cent

The repeat image dispayed here is that of a nobleman seated smoking from a curling stem of a water pipe.
