Sumatran antique Palembang silk songket (172 x 90cm)

£ 360.00

172 x 90 = 6ft 8" x 2ft 11"

From the southern part of Sumatra this celebratory weft ikat is further embellished with bullion brocade - a combination of supplementary gold weaving songket over silk weft ikat limar. The gold thread has retained its color, luster indicative of  high quality materials.  Songket textiles are closely identified in Southeast Asia with Malay-Islamic cultures. The cloth has some damages which have been rectified and reinforced by the use of a thin muslin type cotton support verso.

Despite the asymetric design the textile is in fact quite complete.
