Furniture in the British period from mid 19th cent onward came to be made in quantity in the Punjab. Blending the inspirations of the Moorish style with Syria and the Ottoman Empire and modelled on the earlier products of Nasrid Spain and Mysore and Masulipatam , Hydrabad. Punjabi production centres were concentrated in Hoshiapur in Northern Punjab known for Bone/ivory inlay and Lahore more commonly associated with brass inlay as our example here. Although it is likely both centres used both materials.
A crucial adaptation of these octagonal tables ( and other Punjabi furniture ) was the folding action of the legs which separated from the under-lipped top. Something that was also common in the carved Kashmir furniture of the period. This flat pack feature made it possible to export items easily and in quantity. The featured item here is a table commission ordered from the bazaar for the British customer possibly in Lahore now in Pakistan Punjab.
42 cms in height and approz width the tables are numbered 25 and have the label ARTS & CRAFT DEPOT. Punjab
