The repeat design motif seen on this rug is that of an oval mirror replete with gilded gesso frame.  Made in an Armenian workshop in southern Caucasus quite likely in the town of Shusha and dedicated to the French taste of the day for the Moscovite market.

This rug was once a long runner that has been cut down with the end borders rewoven so technically speaking it is only a fragment. Such long runners were often being made in pairs for grand Romanov houses.
