The design seen on this rug is called 'mirror' since the repeat design is that of an oval mirror replete with gilded gesso frame. Made in an Armenian workshop in southern Caucasus quite likely in the town of Shusha and dedicated to the French taste of the day for the Russian market.
This rug was once a part of a long runner that has been cut down with the end borders rewoven so technically it is only a fragment. Such long runners were often being made in pairs.
