Probably of Abnooz (Ebony): This iron-rich, pitch-black wood was sourced locally from the nearby Shivalik range with Nepal. The work confounded European critics that Nagina artisans could hand-carve it on the street with minimal equipment to a standard that surpassed Western workshops. By the time the Imperial Gazetteer of India was published in 1881, Nagina was officially recognised by a premier centre for elite ebony ware and luxury inlaid goods. Outlets would have included hill stations such as Simla . The table's articulation indicates its easy export applications as a folding item. Nagina usually produced smaller items such as miniature picture frames due to the precious nature of the materials and intensity required to fashion such items.
