This antique runner was once longer with additional outer borders, which have now been removed and shortened so technically this is a fragment. There is also a patch of the same outer part of the runner now removed. Given the high quality and design arrangement from this famous weaving community, it is a distinct possibility that it was once a part of a triclinium audience suite of carpets for a khan / regional aristocrat. Such a set would have comprised of two very long narrow runners either side of a long carpet (kelleigh) and sometimes surmounted a more conventionally proportioned carpet for a noble’s retinue.
