From the Granada region of Spain the rug is made up of three joined parts. These rugs continue to be made to this day but a new one would cost rather more than our antique ! The production must half been a cottage industry based on the narrow widths as our example. Rugs from the 18th and 19th cent often display heraldic emblems and thus each were likely specially commissioned as was ours which is monogrammed M.D.
The surrounding borders contain pattern devices seen in much earlier Spanish rugs
